Danny Liggett was born in Springfield, Illinois, on August 17, 1949, and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1983, he received his Doctor of Education from a university in Massachusetts. His work involved running management training seminars for employees of large companies.
By 1987, Liggett was 37 years old and living in Hoboken, New Jersey, with his girlfriend, Diane Downey (now deceased).
Liggett had issues with drug use dating back to his late teens, when he was arrested in Des Moines. On May 7, 1987, he was desperate for money to purchase drugs and was trying to sell a watch. An acquaintance, Helen Torres, brought him to an apartment at 343 East 10th Street in Manhattan’s East Village to meet a potential buyer: Kissoon Adams.
Investigators say that when Adams did not have enough money for the watch, Liggett attacked both Adams and Torres with a knife. Adams, who used a wheelchair, was fatally stabbed. Torres had her throat cut, and Liggett threatened to kill her if she went to the authorities - but she survived the attack.
Flight and Ongoing Investigation
Immediately after the murder, Liggett fled to Gainesville, Georgia, where he was later involved in a shooting before fleeing the country.
Authorities believe Liggett obtained financial help from family and friends, as well as a fake passport that allowed him to travel to Southeast Asia. He is known to have visited the Philippines and Northern Canada, particularly the Red Lake region. Liggett has family and friends in Des Moines, Iowa and Springfield, Illinois.
Liggett has been charged with second-degree murder, and a federal warrant was issued for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
If he is still alive, Danny Liggett would be 76 years old. His whereabouts remain unknown, 38 years after his violent crimes.
