On June 9, 2025, 45-year-old Shawn Bates left home to go to the store and never returned. Bates crashed his gray Dodge Journey into two parked cars and a Metro Lift bus on Sandpiper Drive. He refused medical attention and was last seen walking near the 12500 block of Sandpiper Drive in southwest Houston at about 10:30 a.m. He was wearing black pants, a black shirt, and red and black Jordan shoes.

Those close to Bates say he had been dealing with serious medical issues and was preparing to start dialysis. He had undergone surgery just three days before he went missing and was taking pain medication at the time. Bates was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis as a teenager. According to his doctor, he was beginning to develop uremia, a condition where the kidneys stop effectively cleaning waste from the bloodstream, which can cause mental confusion and other complications. His loved ones are deeply concerned for his health and safety, especially given his vulnerable condition at the time of his disappearance.
